What is an Anxiety Disorder?
An anxiety disorder is characterized by feelings of nervousness, apprehension, panic, and/or self-doubt in response to real or perceived stressors. While everyone experiences anxiety or nervousness from time to time, an anxiety disorder is a persistent and sometimes overwhelming reaction that causes distress and impacts day-to-day activities.
Are there multiple types of Anxiety Disorders?
Yes. Among the most common are:
Generalized anxiety disorder, which occurs when a person worries excessively or experiences anxiety without an obvious stressor.
Panic disorder, which is characterized by sudden and repeated attacks of fear or panic, or a persistent dread of a repeated attack of anxiety.
Social anxiety disorder, which is anxiety or a feeling of discomfort when around others in a social situation, often accompanied by self-consciousness and a fear of being judged.
Specific phobias, which sometimes start in childhood or as the result of a frightening experience, are a severe irrational fear or reaction to specific situations or objects (e.g, excessive fear of flying or extreme fear of spiders).
What causes an Anxiety Disorder ?
Anxiety disorders may result from a variety of factors including genetics, brain chemistry, personality and life events. Regardless of the cause, anxiety and anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only about one-third of patients suffering from anxiety seek professional help.
