ADHD Q & A

What are the common Symptoms of ADHD ?

Symptoms of ADHD can differ from person to person, but there are three basic types of ADHD. Each one is identified by the symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. When the main symptoms are inattention, distraction, and disorganization, the type is usually called primarily inattentive. The symptoms of hyperactivity and possibly impulsiveness appear to diminish with age but are seen in the primarily hyperactive/impulsive type. The third type has some symptoms from each of the other two and is called the combined type. Patients with ADHD or ADD often have trouble functioning at home and in school and can have difficulty making and keeping friends. If left untreated, ADHD may interfere with school and work, as well as with social and emotional development. Patients with ADHD may have:

Difficulty paying attention

Procrastination

Being easily bored

Difficulty completing projects

Difficulty learning something new

Being easily distracted and forgetful

Not listening when someone is speaking

Frequent squirming or fidgeting

Needing to be in constant motion

Difficulty participating in quiet activities

Talking incessantly

Blurting out inappropriate words or comments

Interrupting others

Difficulty controlling emotions

Interrupting other conversations frequently

With age symptoms of ADHD may reduce, however it is extremely unlikely for it to completely go away. There are strategies which help clients manage their ADHD symptoms and pretty much live normal lives.

How does Max Psychiatry help treat ADHD ?

Unlike many medical conditions, ADHD cannot be diagnosed by drawing blood or ordering an MRI. Instead, healthcare professionals rely on symptoms reported by the patient or specific kinds of cognitive testing to assess brain function. There are neuropsychological tests that can provide precise information on brain functioning and attention problems. At Max Psychiatry, while we do not administer ADHD tests, our team of psychiatry professionals can help treat it.

Often patients with ADHD benefit from a combination of medication management and psychotherapy. A combined treatment approach allows the patient to develop necessary focus and concentration, as well as, lifelong coping skills to manage ongoing symptoms. Through therapy, a patient is taught to recognize the hyperactive and inattentive behavioral patterns. Once those behaviors are noticed, our psychiatrist or therapist can work with the patient to help him or her develop practical skills to reduce the impact of ADHD symptoms
